
Five die in Kano well collapse, fire incident

Tragedies struck in three local government areas of Kano State, resulting in the deaths of at least five people, including a 10-year-old girl.
The first incident occurred in Badume Kanawa Village in Bichi Local Government Area, where three people lost their lives while attempting to re-dig a well.
The Public Relations Officer of the State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the incidents in a statement on Saturday.
He said the tragedy happened when the rope they were using accidentally snapped while one of them, Sa’idu Gada, was working inside the well.
He explained: “Our men from the agency’s headquarters went to the scene of incident, on arrival they found three people working to re-dig a well, a rope accidently was cut when the father is working inside the well.
“The person named Sa’idu Gada, aged about 65, could not come out, then his son, Sani Isyaku, aged about 20, went in with intention to rescue his father but all efforts was in vein, then the third person, Yakubu Abdullahi, aged about 60, went in with the intention to rescue them but also could not come out.”
He added that Service personnel managed to rescue the three people unconscious, but they were later confirmed dead. The victims were handed over to DSP of Badume Police Division in Bichi Local Government Area, Kabiru Iliyasu.
Another tragedy occurred in Danbatta Local Government Area, where a boy of about 10 years old, Hassan Iliyasu Haruna, fell into a well and died.
The third incident took place in Nassarawa Local Government Area at Badawa Layin Day, where a 10-year-old girl lost her life in a fire on Thursday, 4 December 2025.
“At about 11:57 am, our men from the Headquarters mobilize to the scene of incident, on their arrival, they found a building of ground floor of about 25 x 20 ft use as a dwelling house, engulfed in flames. The affected area of the house included two bedrooms well alight,” Abdullahi said.
He added: “A 10-year-old girl was trapped and rescued unconscious, but was later confirmed dead.”
The Director of the agency, Sani Anas, has urged the public to stop entering wells when someone is trapped, warning that engaging in such acts could lead to loss of lives.
