Persons with disabilities demand inclusivity, equal rights

Persons with disabilities in Anambra State have demanded inclusivity and equal accessibility to participate in all aspects of societal activities, including education, employment, and healthcare in the state.

The group insistes that authorities must remove barriers, challenges and discrimination against PWDs.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre in Awka, on Monday, the Chairman, Anambra State Disability Right Commission, Chukwuka Ezewuzie, said persons with disabilities in the state face serious challenges in the area of limited access to public building, healthcare, education and employment opportunities, among others.

Ezewuzie said the interaction with the media was part of the activities marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, adding that the Anambra State Disability Rights Commission has concluded plans to promote inclusive education, enforce accessibility standards, provide economic empowerment and advocate for policy change.

He said, “This is part of our activities marking the 2025 International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The two international summits held this year by the United Nations emphasised on the accessibility and inclusivity for the persons with disabilities.

“The global disabilities summit in Berlin, Germany and social development summit in Doha, Qatar, both issued communique highlighting the indispensability of inclusivity and accessibility in any plan or budget for advancing national development.

“The Berlin summit proposes that the 15 per cent of the world budget should be set to take care of the disability population which constitutes 15 per cent of the world population.

“Anambra State is currently holding South-East leadership position of the National Government Forum of Disability Commission and Agencies of persons with disabilities.

“The state disability right commission was established in 2021 to implement the provision of the Disability Right Law 2018 to promote and protect the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities, and to prohibit discrimination against individuals with disabilities in Anambra.”

He stated that Anambra State is the first state in the South-East region to enact a law which domesticated as required by the United nations Convention on the right of persons with disabilities, first state in the South-East to have a Commission that works daily, first state to appoint a political officeholder with a disability as well as Permanent Secretary with visual impairment.
