
Mob lynches suspect over murder of 70-yr-old
There is tension in the Maraba, Hotoro area of Kano metropolis following the gruesome killing of 70-year-old Alkassim Muhammed, who served as muezzin of a local mosque in the area.
The muezzin was reportedly attacked around 5am, when he was about to call the Subhi prayer.
His attacker overpowered him and slit his throat, leaving him in the pool of blood.
The incident was said to have drawn the attention of neighbours, who descended on the attacker with clubs and knives, but could not subdue him.
The suspected killer took to his heels and ran into another house where he stabbed a 26-year-old Suleiman Abdullahi Suleiman who was sleeping in his room.
The identity of the assailant was not immediately confirmed, but a resident of the area, Alhassan Muhammad, gave his name as Abubakar.
The brutality of the attack that left the Muezzin dead and Suleiman Abdullahi seriously wounded sparked outrage among residents of the area.
A mob quickly descended on the suspect, killing him and setting his house ablaze.
Reports suggest that the remains of the suspect were also set ablaze, escalating the violence and creating a tense atmosphere in the neighborhood.
Armed policemen mobilised to the area had difficulty dispersing the mob, who attempted to set another house belonging to the elder brother of the suspected attacker ablaze.
The development reportedly heightened tension, prompting residents to remain indoors to avoid further unrest.
Police are yet to comment on the incident as armed personnel cordoned off all exit points leading to the house of the suspect.
However, the dead body of the Muazzein was released to his family by the police and was buried according to Islamic rites.
