LASU graduates poised to modernise Nigeria’s transport system — VC

The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, has reaffirmed that the university is fully committed to grooming innovative graduates capable of modernising Nigeria’s transport and logistics system.

Speaking at the 2025 Industry Day 3.0, organised by the School of Transport and Logistics in collaboration with the Department of Procurement and Supply Chain Management, Kaduna State University, the VC, represented by the Director, School of Part-Time Studies, Prof. Oluwatobi Pemede, said LASU was building a new generation of innovators who will drive national development.

In a statement signed by LASU on Friday, she said, “Our mission is to nurture solution-driven graduates, innovators who will transform the nation’s transport and supply chain landscape.

“I encourage our students to learn with curiosity, connect with intentionality, and envision themselves as professionals equipped for a world that increasingly relies on logistics intelligence.”

The event, held at the Femi Gbajabiamila Conference Centre, LASU Main Campus, Ojo, Lagos, ended on December 12, 2025, and featured a dynamic mix of intellectual sessions, career immersion, debate, networking, and cross-institutional collaboration.

In her welcome address, Acting Dean of SOTAL, Dr Ogochukwu Ugboma, described the event as “a bridge linking academia with industry, theory with practice, and ambition with opportunity.”

She added, “LASU remains committed to producing graduates who are academically grounded, industry ready, globally competitive, and capable of leading in a fast-changing logistics ecosystem.”

Ugboma noted that Industry Day 3.0 was deliberately enriched with career talks, expert-led sessions, field trips, structured networking, and the Students’ Debate Competition.

She thanked the Vice-Chancellor, “whose support continues to elevate SOTAL’s vision and impact.”

Head of the Department, Procurement and Supply Chain Management, KASU, Dr Usman Abbas, commended LASU for a successful four-day engagement held from December 8 to 11.

He said, “I express profound gratitude to the LASU Vice-Chancellor, the Acting Dean, and the entire SOTAL community for their hospitality and collaboration. The synergy between our institutions has strengthened ties and enriched the experience for both universities.”

Representative of one of the major sponsors, LEARN Logistics by Kuehne Foundation, Country Director Mr Stephen Akut, urged students to take the programme seriously.

He stated, “Industry Day offers a rare platform to learn, connect, collaborate, and build networks that can redefine your future careers. Immerse yourselves fully in the learning process.”

A major highlight was a panel session moderated by former SOTAL Dean, Prof. C. Asenime, who offered insights on rising opportunities for graduates.

He explained that the BSc LSCM programme positions students for relevance “both within Nigeria and globally.”

The Students’ Debate Competition featured mixed groups from LASU and KASU debating the motion,

“Soft skills, specifically cross-cultural negotiation and ethical governance, are a greater determinant of success in the AfCFTA era than mastery of disruptive technical competence (AI, Blockchain, IoT).”

Mr Akut awarded the winning group ₦500,000, while other groups received ₦200,000 each, with additional gift items provided by SOTAL.

The National Director, CILT (Next Gen), Mr Reynolds Shodeinde, conducted the professional induction of students into the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, marking their formal entry into the industry.

Outstanding scholars also received cash gifts from dignitaries as encouragement for their excellence and diligence.

Ugboma further presented awards to valued SOTAL partners.

The programme ended with a networking session that allowed students to form professional relationships.
