YPP NEC ratifies expulsion of Anambra Rep over anti-party

The Young Progressives Party, on Thursday, ratified the expulsion of the federal lawmaker representing Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo, Uzokwe Peter, over alleged anti-party activities.

The decision was taken at the party’s 24th National Executive Committee meeting held in Abuja, where leaders converged to address rising internal tensions, recent defections and concerns about shrinking opposition space nationwide.

Uzokwe’s expulsion, originally announced by the National Working Committee, was unanimously upheld after the NEC reviewed multiple petitions and “verified video evidence” of alleged anti-party conduct.

In the viral clip, Uzokwe could be heard saying, “YPP is not contesting any election. Did you hear me? I am the leader of YPP, and my supporters are here. In my constituency, I have told them to collapse it for His Excellency Chukwuma Soludo.

“We are not contesting any election. Even if we contest any, it has to be for Anambra North. So, YPP is not contesting. Only APGA and Soludo are running for this election. I will be home till after the election when His Excellency (Soludo) is returned to office.”

Addressing journalists after the NEC meeting, National Publicity Secretary, Egbeola Martins, condemned the lawmaker’s statement as false, misleading, and a deliberate act of sabotage against the party.

“The NEC unanimously upheld the decision of the NWC to expel Hon. Uzokwe Ifeanyi Peter, member representing Nnewi, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

“His expulsion follows multiple petitions and verified video evidence of anti-party activities constituting gross misconduct in violation of the party’s constitution, which clearly outlines offences and sanctions.

“We reaffirm zero-tolerance policy for acts that undermine party unity, discipline and cohesion,” he noted.

The NEC also lauded the appointment of former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (retd.), as Minister of Defence, describing him as “a round peg in a round hole.”

The party reiterated that national security should never be politicised and must be entrusted to competent professionals.

“In this regard, we call on the President to extend this renewed seriousness to all non-performing heads of security agencies, especially the current Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, whose performance has fallen short of expectations,” it stated.

Towards the end of its meeting, the NEC moved to strengthen its national structure by electing seven officers to fill longstanding vacancies in line with the Electoral Act 2022.

Those newly elected include Hajiya Nana Mahmoud (Deputy National Chairperson), Chigozie Udogu (Deputy National Secretary), Uche Levis (National Legal Adviser), Owoyombo Solomon (Acting National Youth Leader), Paul Chukwuma (National Leader), Sani Darma (North West Zonal Chairman), and Olatunbosun Abolarinwa (National Security Adviser).

The party urged the new officers to serve “with diligence, integrity and unwavering commitment to the ideals of the Young Progressives Party.”
