Police file charge against female activist accused of ‘bullying’ Gov Abiodun
Police Command in Ogun State on Monday disclosed that it has filed a six-count charge against a female activist, Adetoun Onajobi, popularly known as @justadetoun.
The charges, including alleged cyber bullying and publishing of false accusations against Governor Dapo Abiodun and his government, were filled before a Federal High Court sitting in Abeokuta.
The Police Spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday in Abeokuta.
Daily Trust reports that Adetoun, an Ogun State-born activist, had recently called out Abiodun in a series of videos posted on her social media handles, where she hurled abusive words at the governor over his performance in office.
The attacks followed the accident involving Nigerian-born British professional boxer Anthony Joshua on Monday, December 29.
The boxer lost two friends and trainers when their SUV rammed into a stationary truck along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The activist, however, alleged that Joshua and his friends were abandoned by the governor and claimed that the state had no single functional ambulance.
Following the allegations, the Police Command invited the female activist for questioning.
The Police Spokesperson said she was invited on January 2, but the suspect didn’t show up, rather she (Adetoun) through her lawyer, wrote to the Police claiming that she was medically indisposed and unable to attend the meeting.
However, Babaseyi said the command’s investigation found claims contained in the medical report attached to the letter to be false, hence, it has arrested the doctor who issued the report, and charged him to court for “uttering a false document, and obstructing the course of justice.”
He said “Discreet investigations by the Police, however, confirmed the falsity of the claims contained in the medical report. This led to the arrest of the doctor, who subsequently admitted that the entire medical report was a ruse, crafted at the direction of the suspect, Adetoun Onajobi, during a phone conversation between them, facilitated by her lawyer.
“Consequent upon this revelation, the doctor was arraigned before an Ogun State Magistrates’ Court for conspiracy, uttering a false document, and obstructing the course of justice.”
For Adetoun, the Police publicist, said she remained “evasive and rebuffed every invitation extended to her by the Police.”
He added that “Her current whereabouts are unknown.”
According to him, the command remains resolute in its duty to tackle all forms of crime brought to its attention, whether violent, white-collar, or digital, while ensuring full respect for the constitutional rights of all persons.
“The Command continues to trail other suspects connected to the false information allegedly deployed by Adetoun Onajobi in an attempt to obstruct police investigations.
“Furthermore, having reneged on her prior undertaking to honour police invitations, the Command will exhaust all lawful means to apprehend and produce her before the Court to answer the charges already filed against her,” Babaseyi said.
