Peacebuilding: Youths trained to tackle extremism, violence
Dozens of youths in Yobe State have been trained on to counter extremism and address religious and cultural violence through peacebuilding and mutual understanding.
The training focused on mentoring intergenerational dialogue by developing peace champions and promoting civic engagement, with the aim of bridging the widening gap between generations.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of ZAI Development Foundation, Fatima Kolo Lawan, said the initiative was designed to respond to rising extremism and violence while addressing gaps that undermine peace, trust and youth participation in community decision-making.
She explained that youth leaders drawn from the ten organisations were equipped with practical skills in peacebuilding, dialogue facilitation and mentorship. According to her, the participants are expected to return to their communities better prepared to foster dialogue, prevent conflict and promote active citizenship.
Lawan added that the youths were also trained on engaging elders, traditional and religious leaders, women and other stakeholders in respectful and constructive conversations that encourage understanding rather than division.
Earlier, the training consultant, Mr Tachia Jarlath, said the project aims to identify young people and prepare them as peace champions within their communities. He said participants are expected to step down the knowledge and skills acquired to help prevent youths from being recruited by extremist and violent groups.
