ADC to FG: Tackle insurgency the way you thwarted Benin coup
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has commended the federal government for its “swift intervention” following the coup attempt in Benin Republic but challenged the administration to demonstrate similar urgency in confronting insurgency, banditry and violent crimes in Nigeria.
The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, expressed concern over the rising trend of democratic reversals in West Africa, stressing that genuine democratic stability could only be sustained through good governance, improved livelihoods and tolerance for opposition.
Abdullahi said the party applauded Nigeria’s prompt move to defend the constitutional order in Benin Republic. However, he cautioned that such intervention must comply with the constitutional provisions guiding external military deployment.
“While the unilateral action taken by the president might have been expedient, it must still be subjected to National Assembly ratification as required by the constitution,” he stated.
The ADC questioned the inconsistency of Nigeria’s foreign interventions, recalling the government’s slow response to the Guinea-Bissau crisis despite a former Nigerian president being caught in the instability.
“What changed? What determines when Nigeria acts firmly and when it delays?” he queried, warning that such inconsistency fueled perceptions that the Benin intervention might have been influenced by a more powerful foreign country.
“If Nigeria can react decisively across its borders, why does it fail to show similar urgency as banditry, terrorism and violent crimes continue to hold communities hostage?” he added.
The statement emphasised that defending democracy must begin at home: “A government that can act swiftly abroad must also act decisively at home. The protection of Nigerian lives, restoration of security and rebuilding of trust between citizens and the state constitute the true foundation of democracy.”
