
Man charged over attempt to set mosque ablaze
The police in Ekiti State Command have charged one Alhaji Jamie Kareem Alabi with breaching the peace and attempting to set fire to a mosque in the state. The prosecutor, Inspector Olubu Apata, told the court that the defendant and others at large, at Igbara Odo Ekiti in Ilawe-Ekiti, conspired to commit an offence, a conduct likely to provoke a breach of peace in the community. Inspector Apata stated that the defendants and others invaded the Igbara Odo Mosque without authority, chased worshippers away, and attempted to set fire to the mosque. The prosecutor said the offence committed is punishable under Section 422, 181(d), 416 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State 2021. Counsel to the defendant, Barrister Ibraheem Tajudeen, urged the court to admit his client to bail, saying he would not jump bail. The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Abayomi Adeosun, granted bail of N250,000 with two sureties in like sum. The case was adjourned until January 13, 2026, for mention and transferred to Ilawe-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s court.
