The founder of CH Homes, Dr Carolyna Hutchings, outlined her strategy for building scalable, purpose-driven luxury enterprises in Africa, highlighting the importance of systems, integrity, and deliberate growth. She shared the insights with The PUNCH on Tuesday.
Reflecting on her career spanning entertainment, construction, real estate, interior design, and luxury manufacturing, Hutchings said she values deliberate, measured growth.
“Meaningful work requires time, clarity, and the quiet courage to trust your own vision, even when the world does not fully understand it,” she said.
Born to a Scottish father and a Nigerian mother, Hutchings was raised in Nigeria, where her multicultural upbringing shaped her approach to business. She holds a bachelor’s degree in geographical and regional planning from the University of Calabar, a master’s in international law and diplomacy from the University of Lagos, and an MBA from Edinburgh Business School.
A Scottish-Nigerian actress, film producer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, she said her business philosophy is rooted in Africa’s untapped manufacturing potential.
“Africa was spending billions importing products it could produce with excellence. It was not a lack of talent, capability, or creativity holding us back, but the absence of intentional structures to support production at a global standard,” she said.
The entrepreneur added that, in her view, luxury is defined less by price than by “the quiet marriage of precision, durability, and intention. When these elements come together, a product carries its own authority; it simply is.”
Integrity, quality, and innovation, she said, are central to enterprise success. “In markets where shortcuts are common, choosing transparency and accountability is a strategic advantage. Quality is not something you defend once; it is something you protect every day, in every detail,” Hutchings said. “Innovation is not an occasional pursuit; it is a lifelong commitment to improving, evolving, and anticipating what the market will need next.”
Beyond building businesses, she emphasised the importance of mentoring emerging entrepreneurs, especially young women. The entrepreneur encouraged them to embrace curiosity, structure, and purpose, noting that “confidence does not have to be loud to be effective. The most enduring confidence is quiet, steady, and deeply rooted in self-awareness.”
Her insights underline a broader vision for African enterprise: creating industries, influencing economies, and transforming narratives.
“When African entrepreneurs build with intention, we do not just create businesses. We build industries. We influence economies. We shift narratives. And we contribute to the transformation of nations,” she said.
Hutchings is renowned for her contributions to enterprise, leadership, and social impact and has become a leading voice in advocating structured, purpose-driven entrepreneurship in Africa.
She noted, “The future of African luxury will not be defined elsewhere. It will be imagined, crafted, and elevated here by the people who believe in its potential and are willing to design the systems that make it possible.”
