One killed, many injured as gunmen attack police station in Kogi
Gunmen suspected to be bandits on Sunday night attacked the Obajana Police Divisional Headquarters in Kogi State, leaving one person killed and several others injured.
The incident reportedly occurred around 10pm when the assailants stormed the police operational base in Obajana.
Security sources said operatives of the Joint Operational Force, comprising divisional police personnel, the Police Mobile Force, Quick Response Unit, Immediate Response Team, Counter-Terrorism Unit and local vigilantes, swiftly repelled the attack.
Those injured during the incident were taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Kogi State Command, CSP William Ovye Aya, said the Nigeria Police Force successfully foiled the attack and arrested several suspects.
“The Nigeria Police Force has foiled an attempted attack on the Obajana Operational Base by suspected criminal elements and successfully arrested several suspects,” the statement said.
The command attributed the attack to recent police operations against criminal gangs in the state.
According to the statement, on January 10, 2026, the police conducted clearance and aggressive operations across identified flashpoints and hideouts, with support from the Police Air Wing.
“The operation recorded significant success, which is believed to have provoked sleeper cells of the hoodlums.
“In a bid to retaliate, the criminal elements attempted to launch an attack on assets and facilities at the Obajana Operational Base.
“However, the attempt was swiftly repelled as police operatives on duty conducted a coordinated counter-drill, effectively neutralising and degrading the assailants.”
The police said efforts were ongoing to track and arrest fleeing suspects and to determine the source and motive behind the attack.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Special Operations in Kogi State, AIG Alonyenu F. Idu, alongside the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment.
During the visit, the AIG commended officers at the base and urged them to remain courageous, vigilant and professional in the fight against crime.
The police reassured residents of Obajana and surrounding communities that security operations would be sustained until all criminal elements were dismantled.
Members of the public were urged to support the police with timely and credible information and to report suspicious movements to the nearest security agency.
