Jigawa: 1 killed, village razed in farmer–herder clash
A longstanding conflict between farmers and herders in Yelwan Musari village, Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State, erupted again at the weekend, leaving one person dead, several injured, and the community largely destroyed after months of unsuccessful peace efforts.
Residents identified the victim as Magaji Mai’aya, a local farmer.
Villagers said Saturday’s violence resulted from unresolved grievances and the inability of authorities to sustain mediation.
Ado Musa, a farmer in Yelwan Musari, said tensions had been building for months as interactions between both sides collapsed and mistrust deepened.
Musa said gunmen stormed the village between Saturday and early Sunday, burning houses and rice milling facilities.
He alleged the attackers also blocked the Guri–Hadejia highway, preventing the injured from reaching Hadejia General Hospital.
Security operatives arrived later but could not immediately halt the violence. While farmers confirmed one death, it remains unclear whether herders recorded casualties.
Several people, including a police officer, were injured.
Police spokesperson SP Lawan Shiisu Adam confirmed one death, one missing person, and two injured, adding that normalcy had been restored.
The incident occurred days after a similar clash in Zarga village, Taura LGA, where 12 farmers were injured. Guri and the surrounding areas, known for fertile land used by both farmers and herders, face growing pressure from land competition, migration patterns, and climate-related stress.
