Turaki meets PDP state chairmen
The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tanimu Turaki (SAN), on Wednesday met with 29 state chairmen of the party in Abuja as part of efforts to tighten his grip on the party’s national leadership amid ongoing internal disputes. Speaking at the meeting held at the Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Turaki declared that the attendance of the overwhelming majority of state chairmen had reaffirmed the legitimacy of the National Working Committee (NWC) elected at last month’s National Convention in Ibadan. “Today is a day of fulfillment. Some people outside who claim to be members of our party, though the world knows they are not, say they have a faction. “But when 29 state chairmen are here with us, with apologies from two others, and when you factor in those chapters that were dissolved and will soon be reconstituted, then tell me, who is not here?” He said. Turaki insisted that the presence and support of the state chairmen clearly demonstrated who controlled the authentic structures of the party. “If all the state chairmen are here with us, then who is it that is not with us? If they are standing with us, who then is fighting us? This is something for the whole world to see,” he added. Turaki’s emergence was rejected by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and his allies, who continue to challenge the leadership that emerged from the Ibadan convention. Addressing stakeholders, Turaki stressed that all major decisions taken by the NWC were done in consultation with the Forum of State Chairmen, noting that the committee’s effectiveness depended heavily on their cooperation. He assured the chairmen that the new PDP leadership was committed to returning the party to the people and repositioning it to reclaim power in 2027.
