Governor Bassey Otu has donated N20 million to support the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem appeal fund, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening security and honouring the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes in Cross River State.
The donation was announced during the launch of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem at the Women Development Centre, Calabar, on Friday. Governor Otu was represented at the event by his deputy, Peter Odey.
Speaking at the occasion, the governor praised the dedication of the military, paramilitary, Police, Department of State Services and other security agencies in protecting the state and the nation, as well as those who paid the ultimate price for national unity and peace.
He said, “We acknowledge the unwavering commitment and resilience of security personnel who have made Cross River the safest state in Nigeria. The administration’s achievements in security would not have been possible without their cooperation and professionalism.”
“The administration of Governor Bassey Otu has donated N20 million to support the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem appeal fund to strengthen security and honour the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes in Cross River,” he stated.
He emphasised that peace and security remain the foundation upon which meaningful growth and development are built.
He further highlighted recent gains recorded by the security agencies, including the apprehension of a dreaded kidnap kingpin, the rescue of kidnap victims, the arrest of bandits, improvements in joint operations and strengthened maritime security.
“As a mark of honour and respect for members of the armed forces, both fallen and serving, all civil servants and political appointees in the state are directed to wear the Remembrance emblem throughout the period,” he added.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Social Welfare and Community Development, Prof. Margaret Ene-Ita, welcomed participants and described the event as a celebration of the courage and patriotism of the Nigerian Armed Forces. She noted that the emblem launch reaffirms collective gratitude and responsibility and highlighted the governor’s special fundraising initiative to support veterans, widows and their children. She appealed to philanthropists, development partners, corporate bodies and government organisations to support the cause.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Cross River State Council, Comr. Daniel Ojugbo, said the event seeks to honour and raise funds for the welfare of veterans and families of fallen heroes. He described the emblem as a symbol of remembrance and hope for a peaceful future.
He noted that the Armed Forces Remembrance Day is marked annually on January 15 and commended the governor for his unwavering support in hosting the event and for the assistance given to the Legion since he assumed office.
