‘Tinubu reforms offer pathways for youth empowerment‘
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has urged Nigerian youths to take advantage of opportunities emerging from the national reforms being implemented under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, describing them as vital pathways for self-development and nation-building.
Idris made the call while delivering the 2026 convocation lecture at the 34th convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA), Niger State.
The lecture, titled “Youth and Nation Building: Navigating Opportunities in an Era of National Reforms,” focused on the role of young people in shaping Nigeria’s future amid ongoing economic and governance changes.
Describing Nigeria as a youthful nation with vast potential, the minister said the country’s prospects depend largely on how effectively its young population is educated, skilled and productively engaged.
“Nigeria, like the rest of Africa, is a very youthful country, with about half of our population under the age of 20 and nearly three-quarters under 35,” he said. “With the right education, skills and preparation for the rapidly transforming workplaces of the 21st century, Nigeria can become an unstoppable global force.”
Idris said the reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration were deliberate and necessary steps aimed at resetting Nigeria’s economic and governance systems, arguing that sustainable nation-building was impossible without bold reforms.
“There is no nation-building without reforms,” he said. “Reforms protect us from the trap of doing the same thing repeatedly while expecting different results.”
He highlighted key policy measures such as the removal of petrol subsidy, the unification of the foreign exchange market and the introduction of new tax laws, noting that the reforms were designed to promote fairness, transparency and efficiency rather than impose additional burdens on citizens.
“The goal was never to take more from Nigerians, but to simplify taxation and make it fairer and more transparent,” Idris said.
