Gunmen abduct 5 Rivers varsity students
Gunmen suspected to be cultists abducted five students of the Rivers State University (RSU), Nkpolu-Oroworukwu, Port Harcourt, from their off-campus residence in Emuoha Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday.
Daily Trust recalls that students living outside the institution’s Emuoha satellite campus protested last week over incessant attacks and harassment, calling on the school management to relocate them to the main campus in Port Harcourt.
However, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, speaking at a pre-convocation press briefing on Monday, said the university would neither close the Emuoha campus nor relocate the students because of “pockets of criminal incidents” in the area.
While the last reported robbery incident occurred in Rumuji, Tuesday’s abduction came barely hours after the Vice Chancellor’s assurances in Rumuchi/Rumuohia, also in Emuoha LGA.
A female student who escaped the attack said the assailants invaded the lodge around 2 a.m., shooting and killing the security dog before gaining full access. The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, attributing it to cultists. She said the Commissioner of Police had visited the scene.
She explained that the armed men stormed the isolated community, shooting sporadically before abducting the students to an unknown destination. Tactical police teams, she added, have been deployed to ensure the victims are rescued and the perpetrators apprehended.
“They were abducted by cultists. In the early hours of Tuesday, a group of cultists numbering five stormed an isolated area of Rumuchi/Rumuohia, shot and abducted five persons to an unknown destination,” she said.
