Lagos VIO defies court ruling, resumes operations
The Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) has resumed operations on the state’s roads, despite a court ruling restraining them from doing so.
The move has sparked widespread criticism from motorists and commuters who had hailed the court’s decision as a victory.
According to eyewitnesses, VIO officials were seen patrolling major roads and highways in Lagos, especially along the Mile 2 – Badagry expressway, stopping vehicles and issuing fines to drivers who allegedly flouted traffic rules.
The Court of Appeal in Abuja had in December 2025, affirmed a judgment barring the Directorate of Road Traffic Services and Vehicle Inspection Officers from stopping motorists, confiscating vehicles, or imposing fines on road users.
In a unanimous decision, a three-member panel held that there was no basis to overturn the Federal High Court’s ruling of October 16, 2024, which prohibited VIO officials from harassing motorists.
The appeal filed by the VIO was dismissed for lacking merit in the lead judgment delivered by Justice Oyejoju Oyewumi.
Justice Nkeonye Maha of the Federal High Court had earlier ruled that no law empowered VIO officials to stop, impound, confiscate, seize, or impose fines on motorists.
But VIO officials were seen operating along the Mile 2 – Badagry expressway on Thursday.
Specifically, the officials were sighted at the Iyana-Era bus stop, the Mile 2 – Badagry expressway, stopping vehicles and requesting their documents.
Following their actions, motorists have expressed frustration and disappointment at the development, describing it as an affront to the rule of law.
“This is unacceptable,” said one motorist. “The court has spoken, and the VIO should respect the ruling.”
The Lagos State Government has yet to comment on the development, but it is clear that the move has reignited tensions between motorists and the VIO.
