Kwara Begins Action Against Land Grabbers at State Polytechnic
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State has ordered the immediate perimeter fencing of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, to curb persistent encroachment and land grabbing on the institution’s land.
The polytechnic has for years been affected by land disputes, with alleged land grabbers reportedly selling portions of the school premises to unsuspecting buyers, while other individuals continue to lay claims to parts of the land.
The Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr AbdulRahman Jimoh, disclosed the directive during a media parley jointly organised by the Department of Strategic Communication and Media Studies and the Information and Publications Division of the institution.
He said the governor approved the fencing of the 54 year old institution but advised the management to exercise caution in carrying out the exercise.
According to him, the governor expressed concern about the safety of students and the security implications of the fencing process.
“He has given approval for the perimeter fencing of the school but directed that no building belonging to encroachers should be demolished until further instruction,” Jimoh said.
He added that management was also instructed to report immediately to the governor if any disturbance occurs during the exercise, stressing that the fencing was necessary to secure the institution and protect students.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the occasion, Ghali Alaya, urged students to make productive use of their time in the institution and strive for excellence.
He noted that their achievements would justify the sacrifices of their parents.
Also speaking, the Senior Adviser and Counsellor to the Governor, Mallam Saadu Salahu, said the AbdulRazaq administration had transformed the polytechnic from a state of decay to a model of sustainable institutional development and digital readiness.
He said the governor recognised education as the most critical investment for sustainable economic growth, leading to comprehensive reforms over the past seven years.
Salahu noted that the reforms were reflected in fiscal responsibility, staff welfare and consistent funding, adding that salaries of academic and non academic staff are now paid promptly.
He also listed staff training, promotions and improved welfare packages, infrastructure development, strategic financial planning and digital innovation initiatives as key achievements of the administration in the education sector.
