The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation has reaffirmed its commitment to women empowerment, with the aim of positioning them as assets in their communities and the state at large.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Bolaji Dada, made this known on Wednesday at the 2025 Women Assembly organised by the ministry.
Dada said the government, through WAPA, over the years had put measures in place to empower women through various skills acquisition programmes targeted at alleviating poverty.
She added that thousands of women had been lifted and equipped with start-up tools for financial independence, self-sufficiency, and to ensure they contribute to the development of the state.
Dada listed the programmes to include a tuition-free skills acquisition programme across the five divisions in Lagos, the Life Skills and Empowerment Programme, the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative, and the Agricultural Empowerment Initiative.
“Today, we gather again, stronger, more empowered, and more determined to take our rightful place in the development and prosperity of our great state.
“This gathering celebrates the strength, courage, and limitless potential of the Lagos woman. At WAPA, our focus remains clear: we want every woman in Lagos to win, be empowered, independent, and also be an asset and never a liability.
“Through our initiatives, Lagos continues to stand tall as a pace-setter state, leading with innovation, compassion, and people-focused governance.
“As we move forward, we reaffirm our commitment to building a Lagos where every woman is empowered, safe, confident, productive, and fully able to contribute to the vision,” she said.
She said WAPA had intensified sensitisation and public enlightenment on gender-based violence, especially in rural, riverine, and hard-to-reach communities, through community dialogues, advocacy, and stakeholder training to strengthen support systems for survivors.
In her remarks, the wife of the state governor, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, described the assembly as a reaffirmation of the pivotal roles women play in nation-building and in sustaining the values that keep Lagos moving forward.
“As we gather today, every Lagos woman, regardless of age, background, or status, deserves access to knowledge, opportunity, and a dignified life.
“This assembly serves as an avenue to strengthen our capacity and celebrate our remarkable contribution to the agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu,” she said.
