Police arrest 41 over alleged ‘human slaughterhouse’ in Benue
The Benue State Police Command has arrested 41 suspects following public outrage over allegations of a “human slaughterhouse” operating in Wurukum, a suburb of the Makurdi metropolis. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the arrests on Tuesday. She said the police intervention follows viral social media reports claiming that unsuspecting young girls were being abducted and butchered at a specific location on Awe Street in the Wurukum area. DSP Edet stated that the suspects were apprehended during coordinated raids on identified “black spots” in Awe Street, Wurukum, and Wadata. She emphasized that the arrests are part of ongoing efforts to verify the credibility of these disturbing claims. Disturbing testimonies The police swung into action after several young women shared online accounts of attempted abductions linked to the area. One alleged victim narrated that she was abducted in December 2025 after boarding a commercial motorcycle around 8pm while returning from a church programme. According to her, the rider diverted to Awe Street under the pretext of picking up a parcel. She claimed she was forced into a room where she saw other girls with their hands tied before she managed to escape. In a similar account, another young woman stated she boarded a motorcycle along Gboko Road but became suspicious when the rider attempted a detour to Awe Street to “pick up a document.” Recalling the previous abduction stories, she insisted on ending the journey midway. Police response Responding to the growing public concern, the PPRO assured residents that the command is treating the reports with the utmost seriousness. “I am aware of this, and the report has been forwarded for action. A raid of black spots was organized at Awe Street, Wurukum, and Wadata, where 41 suspects were arrested for screening,” Edet said. The PPRO urged residents to remain calm while investigations continue to establish the facts surrounding the allegations.
