NEST360 powers UCH, others with 90kW solar inverter
The University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan; Adeoyo Maternity Teaching Hospital; and Oni Memorial Children’s Hospital have received a combined 90-kilowatt solar inverter boost from NEST360, an international alliance committed to improving newborn survival across Africa. At UCH, a newly installed 60-kilowatt solar inverter was officially commissioned for the Special Care Children’s Unit, while Adeoyo and Oni Memorial each received 15-kilowatt systems, an intervention designed to ensure stable, round-the-clock power for critical neonatal care. NEST360, described as an innovative global health initiative focused on reducing neonatal mortality through scalable, evidence-based solutions, has now provided interventions in 23 health facilities across Nigeria. The organisation’s work included supplying affordable, high-quality neonatal equipment and strengthening healthcare capacity.
Speaking at the commissioning in UCH, the Country Lead of NEST360, Professor Chinyere Ezeaka, commended the hospital for what she called its “strong collaboration” with the alliance since 2020.
She emphasised the urgent challenges facing Nigeria’s neonatal sector, noting, “Nigeria ranks second globally in newborn deaths.”
Ezeaka added that NEST360, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health, has continued to supply hospitals with essential neonatal equipment, including radiant warmers, oxygen concentrators and syringe pumps.
“We value this partnership deeply. Our goal is to ensure that every newborn has the chance to survive and thrive,” she said.
NEST360 Country Director, Dr. Opeyemi Odedere, described the solar installation as “a life-changing intervention for newborns requiring uninterrupted power.”
He noted that alongside power solutions, the organisation provides vital equipment for diagnosis, monitoring and the management of newborns, as well as training for healthcare workers on equipment use and maintenance.
“This solar inverter will definitely impact the care of newborn babies. Through your leadership of the management at UCH, the work we do becomes even more meaningful,” he said, expressing gratitude for what he described as the hospital’s enabling environment.
UCH Chief Medical Director, Professor Jesse Abiodun Otegbayo, lauded NEST360 for what he called its transformative five-year partnership with the hospital.
“This collaboration has brought progress in the care of babies and other sectors of our facility. I am full of appreciation for what you are doing,” he said.
