
14 arrested for allegedly hijacking corpse during burial
Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested 14 suspected cultists for allegedly hijacking a corpse during a funeral service in the state.
The suspects, aged between 18 and 40, were apprehended in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area, following a violent disturbance during the burial rites.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Eno Ikoedem, said the incident occurred when suspected cult members disrupted the ceremony and seized the body slated for interment.
She said during the chaos, the suspects also attacked two commercial motorcyclists, inflicting grievous injuries on them.
The police spokesperson said operatives swiftly intervened, arresting the suspects and restoring normalcy to the area.
According to her, items recovered as exhibits included 11 cutlasses, one dagger, and one shovel.
Ikoedem noted that the injured victims were taken to the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH) for treatment, while an investigation into the motive behind the hijacking is ongoing.
