Sanusi seeks value reorientation to tackle drug abuse in Kano
The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, has urged community leaders, government institutions and civil society organisations to revive traditional norms and communal structures as part of a united front in the fight against drug abuse in the state. Speaking on Thursday in a goodwill message delivered at the closing of a three-day stakeholders’ summit on drug abuse with the theme “Strength in Unity: A Multi-Stakeholder Approach to Combating Drug Abuse in Kano,” the Emir said drug addiction has become a grave threat to families, public safety and the moral fabric that has sustained Kano for generations. He said drug abuse is “a direct assault on the dignity of our society,” warning that every young person lost to drugs represents “a destroyed dream, a broken lineage and a future cut short.” The summit, organised by the Kano Reformative Centre in collaboration with UNODC, security agencies, NGOs and traditional institutions, brings together stakeholders to explore a multi-layered approach to prevention, rehabilitation and reintegration. Emir Sanusi said traditional institutions once played a central role in shaping values, enforcing discipline and nurturing youth, noting that community accountability systems have weakened over time. The Emir called on district, village and ward heads, Imams, parents and youth groups to reawaken community structures that previously helped curb social excesses. He urged them to use their influence to break the silence around drug abuse, challenge stigma and support safe, humane pathways for rehabilitation and reintegration.
