The lawmaker representing Aliero/Gwandu/Jega Federal Constituency of Kebbi State, Mansur Musa, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.
His defection was announced in the House of Representatives on Tuesday after the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, read his letter of notification on the floor of the Green Chamber.
Explaining his decision, Musa said the PDP had become engulfed in “deep-seated internal fractures, persistent conflicts and unresolved crises” that made it impossible for the party to function as a credible platform.
“In recent months, the PDP has been overwhelmed by deep-seated internal fractures, persistent conflicts and unresolved crises that have eroded unity, weakened organisational discipline and made it impossible for the party to provide credible leadership,” he wrote.
He said the prolonged divisions within the opposition party had created conditions that were incompatible with the expectations of his constituents.
“These divisions have created an environment incompatible with my mandate and the expectations of the good people of my constituency,” he added.
Musa noted that his decision came after extensive consultations with stakeholders in his constituency and deep personal reflection.
“After prayerful reflection and following extensive consultation with my constituency, community leaders and political stakeholders, it became clear that remaining within a platform engulfed in such an unending crisis will compromise the effective representation that Almighty God has entrusted,” he said.
The lawmaker said the APC offers a more stable and organised political structure, which he believes is necessary for delivering development to his people.
The lawmaker also said, “The APC offers a more coherent and disciplined platform, one that aligns better with the aspirations of our constituency and provides the stability required for meaningful governance,” Musa stated. “My defection is therefore an act of responsibility — rooted in principle, standing by faith and anchored by the overriding need to serve my people without any incompetence.”
He urged the House to update its records to reflect his new party affiliation and prayed for divine guidance in the discharge of national duties.
“I kindly request that this honourable House take note of this development and update the records accordingly. May Almighty Allah guide all our decisions and strengthen our resolve to serve the nation faithfully,” he wrote.
After the letter was read, Musa received a formal welcome into the party from the Green House members and its leadership.
Musa’s defection adds to a series of high-profile exits from the PDP in recent weeks, amid rising tensions within the party and the emergence of rival camps, including factions aligned with Nyesom Wike and Tanimu Turaki.
