The final burial ceremony of the late Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, Olusegun Awolowo, who died at the age of 62, was held on Friday, December 5, 2025, at Our Saviour’s Church, Ikoyi, Lagos State.
During the sermon, the officiating minister spoke on the theme, “Dimensions of Help.” A touching moment came when the various groups Awolowo belonged to took turns to sing their anthems and pay their last respects.
President Bola Tinubu, represented by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, described Awolowo as a man who served Nigeria with passion and unwavering dedication, adding that he was also a dear friend.
Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in his tribute, said Awolowo was not just a public figure but “a bridge between history and the future, ideal and action.” He added, “He worked with quiet dignity, unfazed by conventions, and had an uncommon devotion to the Nigerian dream. We gather to honour our father, brother, grandfather, friend and a true Nigerian… a son of legacy, a servant of our nation, a pillar of his generation and a man of deep humility.”
Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, noted that many people never realised how deep and thoughtful Awolowo was because of his cheerful disposition. “He lived a life of humility and service, with a deep sense of patriotism for this country,” he said.
Other dignitaries in attendance included former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and his wife, Dolapo; Senate President Godswill Akpabio; former Senate President Bukola Saraki and his wife, Toyin; former Delta State Governor, James Ibori; former Ekiti State Governor, Adeniyi Adebayo; former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel; as well as several current and former public office holders and other eminent Nigerians.
Earlier in the week, a wake and night of tributes were held at Harbour Point Event Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.
