Yobe to upgrade 4 mini-stadiums for sports development
The Yobe State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to upgrade four mini-stadiums across four local government areas of the state to boost sports development.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth, Sports and Social Development, Alhaji Gidado Abubakar, disclosed this while addressing journalists during a media tour in the state.
At the rehabilitated 27 August Stadium in Damaturu, the Permanent Secretary explained that construction of a mini-stadium is currently ongoing in Buni Yadi, the headquarters of Gujba Local Government Area, while the stadiums in Potiskum, Nguru, and Yunusari are slated for rehabilitation.
According to him, the construction and rehabilitation of the stadia became necessary because sports facilities promote unity and encourage people to participate in healthy and positive activities.
“This project is part of His Excellency Governor Mai Mala Buni Post-insurgency recovery plan to revive Games and promote unity among the Yobe’s youth.
“Yunusari is one of the epicenters of Boko Haram insurgents, but now with commitments of our governor and the security operatives, peace has been restored in the area,” he said.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Hon. Abdullahi Bego, said the rehabilitation of the 27 August Stadium is part of the state government’s broader plan to improve sports infrastructure, promote talent development, attract major sporting events, and strengthen community engagement through improved facilities.
“Sports unite people from different backgrounds and encourage our teeming youth to achieve their dreams,” he noted.
The Commissioner said that the upgraded stadium can accommodate various sporting activities, including football, basketball, volleyball, handball, lawn tennis, hockey, para-soccer, and karate.
