Ramsey strike lifts Newcastle past Tottenham as pressure mounts on Frank
Jacob Ramsey fired Newcastle United to a vital 2–1 away win over Tottenham Hotspur, piling further pressure on Spurs manager Thomas Frank as his side slipped deeper into trouble.
The defeat leaves Frank with the lowest win percentage of any Tottenham manager in the Premier League era and sees Spurs drop to 16th, firmly in the relegation battle.
Both managers came into the clash at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium under scrutiny following poor runs of form. Frank admitted his injury-hit side were “desperate” for their first league win of 2026, while Newcastle boss Eddie Howe challenged his players to show how much the game meant after just one win in eight matches across all competitions.
It was Howe’s side who delivered on a tense night in north London, with sections of the home crowd chanting “You’re getting sacked in the morning” at Frank as Tottenham chief executive Vinai Venkatesham looked on.
Despite starting without a recognised striker, Newcastle took the lead in first-half stoppage time through an unlikely source. Defender Malick Thiaw reacted quickest after Guglielmo Vicario parried his initial header from Anthony Elanga’s cross, stabbing the rebound home ahead of Pape Matar Sarr and Archie Gray.
Tottenham briefly responded after the interval, drawing level from their first corner of the match. Xavi Simons’ delivery was headed back across goal by Sarr before Gray hooked the ball into the net, sparking wild celebrations inside the stadium.
