5 killed as gas tanker crushes vehicle in Gombe
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of five persons in a fatal road crash involving a gas tanker at Lawanti community in Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State.
The accident occurred on Monday near the Gombe International Airport when a gas-laden tanker collided with and crushed a smaller vehicle.
The Gombe State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Samson Kaura, said preliminary investigations revealed that the crash was caused by reckless driving by the driver of the smaller vehicle, which was travelling from Gombe toward the Bauchi road axis.
According to Kaura, the driver lost control of the vehicle and swerved into the lane of the oncoming tanker heading into Gombe.
He said the tanker driver, in an attempt to avoid a head-on collision, also lost control, resulting in the tanker running over the smaller car.
“The impact led to the instant death of five occupants of the smaller vehicle,” Kaura said.
He described the incident as tragic and avoidable, stressing that strict adherence to traffic rules could have prevented the loss of lives.
He urged motorists to drive cautiously and obey speed limits to safeguard lives and property on the highways.
Kaura added that FRSC rescue teams responded promptly to the scene, evacuated the remains of the victims, and ensured the restoration of traffic flow along the affected route.
