Eterna Plc has partnered Fuelmetrics Limited to deploy self-service fuel stations nationwide, introducing cashless, automated refuelling aimed at addressing persistent inefficiencies in Nigeria’s downstream retail market.
The rollout will see self-service terminals powered by Fuelmetrics’ Epump technology installed across Eterna’s network. “As a service company, when we deliver a service, part of what we’re doing is also giving the customer a choice in how they pay for that service. Deploying this technology is just another way of doing that,” said Olumide Adeosun, Managing Director/CEO of Eterna Plc.
He said the terminals will be permanently supervised by on-site staff to guide customers and drive adoption of the self-service system.
“As the industry evolves, one of the changes we’re seeing is a return to what used to be a much broader experience. We’re back in that space,” said Adeosun while talking about what was attainable in the past.
Fuelmetrics’ Epump platform already automates more than 3,000 fuel stations across Africa, enabling real-time sales tracking, inventory management and remote pump control. The self-service layer extends the platform by allowing motorists to transact directly at the pump without attendants.
The terminals are designed to tackle persistent challenges in Nigerian filling stations, including long queues, dispensing errors and cash leakages. For corporate fleet operators, the system offers real-time transaction visibility and automated reporting, strengthening fuel expense monitoring and cost control.

Olayide Folorunso, Managing Director of Fuelmetrics Limited, said the partnership simplifies fuel management for everyday users and allows Fuelmetrics to scale its impact nationwide, highlighting the role of Nigerian-developed technology in advancing the downstream sector.
“The system works with NFC technology, which means that at some point, payment can also be offline,” Folorunso said. “This terminal is locally adapted to the phone, so there’s local communication between the terminal and the phone to authorize the transaction.”
