The Edo State Government has pledged full enforcement of its new Sanitation and Pollution Management Law to safeguard public health and the environment.
The state Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Nosa Adams, made the commitment on Sunday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Benin, the state capital, noting that the law would strengthen efforts to keep communities clean and address pollution and environmental degradation across the state.
Adams emphasised the importance of remediation, regeneration, and restoration programmes to reverse years of environmental damage. He also highlighted the need for public awareness, urging residents to adopt proper waste management habits.
“The law is geared toward creating a safe and clean environment for all residents.
“Environmental cleanliness begins with personal responsibility, starting from individual homes and neighbourhoods,” he said.
The commissioner outlined the roles of six agencies under the ministry, including the Forestry Commission and Waste Management Board, stressing that coordination among them is central to effective sanitation and pollution control.
Adams said the ministry was engaging the media and wider stakeholders to promote consistent public awareness and harmonise agency roles to prevent duplication of efforts.
Stakeholders at the meeting welcomed the opportunity to discuss environmental challenges and stressed the need for continuous enforcement, citizen participation, and sustained public education campaigns.
Adams reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and the success of the law, noting that collective participation would determine its impact.
The implementation of the Sanitation and Pollution Management Law is expected to improve environmental quality, support sustainable development, and create cleaner, safer spaces across Edo State.
