Kano traffic agency hands over seized beer trucks to Hisba

The Kano State Road Traffic Agency has handed over three truckloads of assorted beer worth millions of naira, which it intercepted, to the Kano State Hisba Board.

The intercepted vehicles, containing four hundred and ten cartons of the commodity, were impounded by KAROTA personnel on night patrol along major streets in the Kano metropolis.

This was contained in a statement released by the Public Relations Officer of the agency, Abubakar Sharada, a copy of which was made available to The Punch on Thursday.

“Our personnel intercepted three trucks of beer loaded with 410 cartons during a night patrol in the Kano metropolis,” Sharada said.

He said the Managing Director of KAROTA, Faisal Mahmud Kabir, handed over the vehicles to the Commander-General of Hisba, noting that the vehicles contained 4,920 bottles of beer meant to be offloaded at different locations in the Kano metropolis.

The Managing Director, represented by the KAROTA Director of Administration and General Services, Mahmud Haido, said impounding the trucks was part of KAROTA’s responsibilities to arrest any suspicious goods plying the streets in Kano and report the suspected culprits to the appropriate security agencies.

Haido assured that the agency would remain vigilant in checking the importation of all intoxicants that could be harmful to the health of the citizens.

Receiving the trucks, the Hisba Commander-General, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa, praised KAROTA personnel for their vigilance and promised that due process would be followed before the final destruction of the impounded beer.

Daurawa, represented by the Head of the Intoxicants Unit, Sani Rimo, said the board would ensure the sustenance of the existing collaboration with KAROTA in checking and tracking prohibited goods being smuggled into the state.

Kano is one of the states in northern Nigeria that implements Sharia regulations, including restrictions on the sale and consumption of alcohol. Although Nigeria operates a secular federal system, individual states in the North began adopting Sharia-based laws in 1999–2000, with Kano establishing a formal structure for enforcement shortly afterwards.

The Kano State Hisba Board was created as the government-backed moral policing outfit responsible for enforcing aspects of Sharia, including prohibitions on alcohol. The board routinely destroys seized alcoholic beverages and conducts periodic operations with other state agencies.

The Kano Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA), established in 2012, is primarily responsible for traffic management and enforcement of transport regulations within the state.

However, the agency often participates in joint security operations and occasionally intercepts goods considered prohibited under Kano’s laws during traffic patrols or routine checks.
