Panic at FCT school over attack rumour
There was pandemonium yesterday at the Government Day Secondary School, Dutsen-Alhaji, located in the Bwari Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory FCT, following a rumour that the school would be attacked by bandits.
Abuja Metro visited the school around 1 pm yesterday, where members of staff were said to be holding an emergency meeting, led by the principal.
Some of the staff who were not part of the meeting spoke to our reporter about what caused confusion around the community and beyond.
They disclosed that the development followed what was termed as a fake letter, which was posted on a platform purportedly written by the bandits, stating that they would attack the school.
One of the interviewed staff stated that as the rumour was going around, a team of soldiers on patrol paid an unscheduled visit to the school around 9 am yesterday, at a time when the students were already seated in the classroom for their ongoing first-term examination.
“However, what was supposed to give them more courage to write their paper made them to become apprehensive. The students fled their classes after noticing the presence of the soldiers.
“It took us about 20 minutes thereafter to be able to convince them to return to the classroom, the staff added.
He said many parents later stormed the school after receiving information of the incidents, and remained present until the second exam was held by the students some hours later.
It was gathered that the ongoing examination which started last week, would go ahead into next week, as scheduled earlier.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, who earlier promised to get back to our reporter with details of the incident, was unable to do so at the time of filing the report.
