FG partners university of Doha for science, technology to modernise technical education

The Federal Government has entered into a partnership with the University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) to accelerate the modernisation of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) across Nigeria.

This followed an official visit by Tunji Alausa, Minister of Education, to the Qatari institution on Monday as part of ongoing reforms aimed at building a globally competitive, industry-ready Nigerian workforce.

In a statement signed by Folasade Boriowo, Director, Press & Public Relations in the Ministry of Education, Alausa was received by Salem Al-Naemi, President of UDST, and other members of the university’s senior leadership.

He announced new collaborative pathways that will strengthen Nigeria’s TVET delivery. These include enhanced faculty exchange and train-the-trainer programmes, through which Nigerian instructors will receive advanced training in priority technical fields such as welding, plumbing, HVAC, electrical installation and solar photovoltaic technology.

The minister explained that the initiative aims to significantly elevate the country’s instructional capacity to international standards.

He further disclosed that UDST will support Nigeria in establishing a robust quality assurance framework to ensure that certificates, diplomas and degrees issued by Nigerian technical colleges meet globally recognised benchmarks.

This, he noted, will enhance the credibility and mobility of Nigerian TVET graduates, especially across Europe and North America.

In addition, the minister noted that Nigeria will collaborate with UDST’s entrepreneurship, innovation and incubation centres to boost youth enterprise development.

Through the partnership, young Nigerians will gain access to incubation support and innovation programmes designed to nurture micro-entrepreneurs, SMEs, high-growth innovators and potentially unicorn-level founders.

Alausa stressed that the partnership reflects the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to develop a skilled and future-ready workforce capable of driving Nigeria’s economic transformation. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s resolve to expand opportunities for young people, strengthen technical training institutions and align the national skills ecosystem with global best practices.

During the visit, the Minister toured UDST’s acclaimed Certificate School, renowned for its competency-based TVET programmes and internationally accredited technical training.

He commended the institution’s strong focus on practical learning, workplace readiness and industry-driven certification, key pillars Nigeria seeks to embed in its TVET transformation agenda.
