A faction of the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, led by its chairman Alhaji Taminu Turaki, is currently holding a closed-door meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Turaki, alongside former governors of Nigeria and Plateau States, Alhaji Muazu Babangida and Sen Jonah Jang, and other senior party leaders, arrived at the former president’s residence within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, at about 11:38am on Saturday.
The PDP leaders subsequently proceeded for a private meeting with Obasanjo.
Details of the discussions have yet to be released.
Ahead of the 2023 PDP presidential primaries Obasanjo, in May 2022, held a closed-door meeting with three PDP governors in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Obasanjo, then, met with Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State and a former Cross River Governor, Donald Duke.
Earlier in January, the same year, Obasanjo told leaders of opposition PDP that he won’t return to the party, when a PDP delegation led by the National Chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu, four former governors, and members of the party’s National Working Committee visited him at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Meanwhile, Turaki has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to return power to the people in deciding key issues within the party.
He also assured that the PDP is ready to secure victories in critical South-West states.
Speaking to party members and supporters at the PDP state Secretariat shortly after a visit to Obasanjo, Turaki said the party is on a clear path to reclaim its dominant political position, starting with the upcoming 2026 elections in Ekiti and Osun States.
A release on official PDP social media handles revealed this on Saturday.
“Let me assure all our members and the good people of the South-West: We will win Ekiti, we will win Osun, and we are not stopping there.
“By the special grace of God and the unwavering support of our people, we will take over Ogun State,” Turaki stated emphatically.
He expressed gratitude to the former President for his counsel during their meeting, which Turaki said has energized the party leadership and reinforced its strategic focus on reclaiming power.
The PDP chairman highlighted grassroots mobilization and renewed unity within the party as key drivers for the expected electoral success, stressing that the party’s vision for the South-West focuses on responsible governance, economic revival, and the delivery of democratic dividends.
“Nigerians are tired of the current trajectory and are ready to return to the PDP,” he added.
Turaki also reiterated the party’s commitment to internal democracy, stating that it is vital to providing Nigerians with a credible and formidable alternative to the ruling party in future elections.
