NASS approves N1.504trn 2026 Nigerian Army budget
A joint committee of the National Assembly on Monday approved the 2026 budget proposal of N1,504,251,069,722 for the Nigerian Army, expressing satisfaction with the presentation by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, announced the decision after a joint budget defence session involving the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Army in Abuja, which featured the Chief of Army Staff.
“We had a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Army on the 2026 budget and, after listening to the presentation of the Chief of Army Staff, all members expressed satisfaction,” Yar’Adua said.
He, however, noted that delays in the release of appropriated funds remain a major concern affecting not only the Army but other Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
“Members of the joint committee agreed that the major issue is the delay in the release of funds, which is affecting all MDAs. But I want to assure the Chief of Army Staff that we are committed to collaborating with him to succeed. The Army is critical to our national life, and we will support you with everything you need,” he added.
Also speaking, Chairman of the House Committee on Army, Hon. Aminu Balele, commended the Chief of Army Staff, officers and men of the Nigerian Army for their patriotism and commitment in the fight against insurgency and in safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity.
He assured that the House Committee would continue to advocate for the timely release of funds to enable the Army discharge its constitutional responsibilities effectively.
“As we conclude the 2026 budget defence, I want to thank my Senate counterpart, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, and his colleagues for this collaboration. I commend the Chief of Army Staff and his team for their dedication and patriotism,” Balele said.
He also appreciated the support of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, pledging sustained legislative backing to ensure prompt fund releases.
“We understand the challenges associated with budget implementation, and we are ready to continue pushing for the timely release of funds so that the Army can deliver on its mandate,” he stated.
