
Zamfara Records Major Gains in TB, Leprosy, Buruli Ulcer Control
The Zamfara State Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Buruli Ulcer Control Programme has recorded major gains in disease detection, treatment and prevention.
The achievement was revealed during a quarterly review meeting with Local Government Area teams held at Fulbe Villa Hotel, Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.
The meeting brought together programme officers, LGA TB supervisors and key stakeholders to review progress and improve service delivery.
The Commissioner for Health, Nafisa Muhammad Maradun, said the programme intensified active case search at all levels of care, leading to 99 percent treatment success rate and 100 percent enrollment for identified patients.
“The Data showed a 27 percent increase in TB case notification in 2025 compared to 2024. Childhood TB notification rose by 47 percent over the same period.” the Commissioner explained.
The programme also distributed project vehicles and motorcycles to support supervision, monitoring and community outreach by the Donor supporting the program.
Dr. Nafisa Maradun said stronger collaboration with partners helped ensure effective implementation of activities across the state.
“Between Q3 2024 and Q2 2025, 8,891 patients were enrolled for treatment where 4,769 were male and 4,122 were female. 8,802 were successfully cured and completed their treatment, giving a 99 percent treatment success rate. The death rate was 0.7 percent, while loss to follow up stood at 0.3 percent.” she revealed.
The Commissioner further added that during the period, 404,098 people were screened for TB, out of which 125,935 were presumptive cases and 10,006 were confirmed.
The programme received laboratory reagents donation worth more than ₦800 million to boost diagnostic capacity in 2025.
Dr. Maradun was represented at the occasion by the Permanent secretary of the Ministry, Malan Bashir Sirajo Gusau.
The Program Manager Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Buruli Ulcer Control Programme, Lawal Sani, said the program is supporting 508 public health facilities out of 739 and 62 private health facilities to provide TB services and operates more than 100 microscopy centers.
According to the program manager, Gusau Local Government Area recorded the highest number of cases.
