Xmas: Security tightened in FCT border communities
Security operatives have been placed on red alert for the duration of the yuletide and beyond in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Abuja Metro reports a massive increase in security patrols in and around Abuja ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Operatives of the newly re-inaugurated Operation Sweep have been deployed to border communities in Bwari and Gwagwalada area councils and their surrounding areas.
Our correspondent, who was in Bwari, which was recently targeted by bandits, observed a heavy security presence.
Men of the security team, comprising the police, civil defence, military and DSS, were seen patrolling communities.
The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had earlier established the operation with four major sectors – Bwari, Gwagwalada, Wuse and Garki – to curb the growing insecurity in the territory.
Operatives comb strategic locations
Abuja Metro also reports that men of Operation Sweep, have begun combing motor parks and other strategic locations to flush out criminal elements.
Mr Adamu Gwary, Director of the Security Services Department of the FCTA, told journalists that the move was designed to ensure a safe yuletide.
Mr Gwary, represented by Dr Peter Olumuji, secretary of the command and control centre, said the ongoing operation would maintain security throughout the festivities.
He explained that Wike had issued “marching orders” to all agencies under Operation Sweep to rid the territory of every form of criminality.
Police patrol Jere-Bwari-Kaduna highway
The FCT and Kaduna State police commands have also embarked on a joint patrol on the Jere-Abuja-Kaduna highway.
The FCT Commissioner of Police (CP), Miller G. Dantawaye, alongside his Kaduna State counterpart, Mohammed Rabiu, spoke to journalists in Jere during a visit.
Mr Dantawaye said the joint patrol aimed to strengthen border security and ensure the safety of residents and commuters during the 2025 festive season.
The CP noted that Jere was a strategic border settlement between the FCT and Kaduna State, serving as a critical intersecting point for anti-crime operations.
He said the exercise was also a “confidence-boosting” measure intended to reassure road users plying the Abuja-Kaduna highway.
The CP urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security personnel by promptly reporting suspicious activities via the command’s emergency lines: 08032003913 and 08061581938.
