NGO marks safer internet day, unveils book on children’s online safety

In commemoration of the 2026 Safer Internet Day, a nonprofit organisation, Webfala Digital Skills for All Initiative (WDSFAI) has held a summit to raise awareness about cyber threats and educate people  on responsible, safe use of digital technologies.

The summit, held last Thursday in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, brought together school children, educators, parents, and digital enthusiasts under the theme: “Smart Tech, Safe Choices: Exploring the Safe and Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence.”

Discussions at the event focused on cybercrime and online fraud, misuse of artificial intelligence tools, data breaches and privacy laws, as well as low digital intelligence and awareness among internet users.

In his keynote address, an officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Zayyanu Umar, highlighted common online crimes, how they are perpetrated, and the importance of vigilance and responsible internet use.

He explained the real-life consequences of cybercrime and stressed that everyone has a role to play in ensuring online safety and protecting vulnerable users.

A Kenya-based lawyer and digital rights advocate, Athena Morgan, who spoke virtually at the summit, delivered a presentation titled “Digital Intelligence vs Cybercrime: Using AI Responsibly to Stay Secure Online.”

She emphasised that technology itself is not the problem, but how it is used.

“Technology is not the enemy; unexamined use of it is,” she said, stressing the need for digital intelligence, the ability to think critically, act responsibly, and make informed decisions online.

According to her, artificial intelligence does not replace human judgment but amplifies it, making digital intelligence a crucial line of defense against cyber threats.

“Children need to be taught to pause and ask questions. Parents must build trust with their children through open conversations, and educators should teach learners how to think, not just impose rules.

” If we want safer digital futures, we must invest not only in tools but in thinking humans,” she argued.

Earlier in her address, the Programmes Manager of WDSFAI, Beulah Ladanu, said the organisation was pleased to join the global community in marking this year’s Safer Internet Day and reiterated its commitment to digital safety and inclusion.

She said: “What we are doing today is to strengthen awareness about online safety and reinforce the importance of collective responsibility in building a safer digital environment. The highlight of the event was the official launch of a book published by the organisation titled “Connected and Safe: Online Adventures.”

The organisation’s Chief Operating Officer, Adedoyin Bello, described the book as a practical guide designed to help children and young people understand online safety in a simple, relatable, and engaging manner.

“It is more than just a book; it is a tool to guide safer choices, smarter decisions, and more confident digital experiences for the next generation. We are excited to finally share it with the world,” he stated.

Following the launch, copies of the book were distributed to teachers in attendance, who pledged to incorporate its lessons into digital literacy efforts in their respective schools.
