Atletico Madrid confirm €40m deal to sign Ademola Lookman
Atletico Madrid have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign Nigerian winger Ademola Lookman.
In a statement on Sunday, the Spanish top-flight club said, “(The clubs) have agreed to the transfer of 28-year-old Nigerian international Ademola Lookman, who is already in Madrid. The agreement is pending a medical examination and the signing of his contract.”

According to media reports, the deal is worth around €40 million, with Lookman set to become one of Atlético’s key attacking additions this season.
The Nigerian winger, who scored a hat-trick in Atalanta’s 2024 Europa League final win over Bayer Leverkusen, has scored three goals in 19 appearances across all competitions for the Italian side this season.
Born in London, Lookman began his career at Charlton Athletic before moving to Everton. He later joined RB Leipzig, with loan spells at Fulham and Leicester City, before signing for Atalanta in 2022.
Since arriving in Bergamo, Lookman has flourished, scoring 55 goals in all competitions. His treble in the Europa League final secured Atalanta’s first-ever European trophy and ended Bayer Leverkusen’s 51-match unbeaten run. It also made him the sixth player in history to score a hat-trick in a European club final and the first to do so since 1975.
Atletico head coach Diego Simeone has been keen for reinforcements following the departures of Giacomo Raspadori to Atalanta and Conor Gallagher to Tottenham earlier in the window.
Lookman arrives as a major boost for Simeone’s side, who sit third in La Liga with 45 points, 10 behind leaders Barcelona.
Atletico will be hoping the Nigerian’s pace and finishing can fire their campaign as they prepare for a two-legged Champions League knockout play-off against Club Brugge later this month.
