Contractors handling Abuja-Lokoja road tasked on timely completion
The federal government has urged contractors handling the Abuja-Lokoja Road projects to accelerate their performance to meet upcoming deadlines. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the reconstruction of the 47-kilometer Kotonkarfe-Abaji (Abuja-bound) section, handled by Messrs Trucrete Solutions Nigeria, is currently only 10.21percent complete. In contrast, the repair of the Lokoja-Ganaja Road, which uses concrete pavement, is nearing completion. Awarded to Gitto Costruzioni Generali Nig. Ltd. in October 2023 with a six-month timeline, the project is currently 99.73 percent complete. Meanwhile, the rehabilitation of Abuja-Lokoja Section 4A by Sailthrough Construction Ltd. has reached only a 22.40 percent completion rate. During the project inspection, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North Central Region), Dr. Abiodun Essiet, said the visit aimed to assess progress and engage with the local community. Dr. Essiet emphasized that the road is a vital artery linking Northern and Southern Nigeria. She noted that while contractors are on-site, the pace of work remains below expectations. According to her, “During the festive period, we recorded heavy traffic on this axis, which prompted an intervention by the Minister of Works. The contractor was directed to open the sections of the road that have already been completed.” She expressed dissatisfaction with the current pace, saying “The progress is not encouraging at all. With only a few months left to the deadline, they have achieved very little. I am not impressed by the level of progress being made. “We are pleading with the Controller and the contractors to intensify their efforts. This is a very busy road, and the public expects more from the president regarding its completion.” In response, the contractors attributed the slow pace of work to various challenges, including funding delays, insecurity, and the difficulties of traffic management on such a high-volume route.
