Bago woos more private investors to establish varsities

The governor of Niger State Mohammed Bago has called on more private sector players to establish universities in the state, saying that the government was willing to support them.

He made this call at the maiden convocation ceremony of the state’s first private university, the Newgate University, Minna.

The governor, who was represented at the event by the deputy governor  Comrade Yakubu Garba, commended the efforts of the institution’s proprietor and management for their achievements within  a very short time.

“As a government, we remain committed to strengthening partnerships that expand educational access and enhance academic quality. We have taken bold steps to uplift learning outcomes at all levels — because a nation can only grow as high as its educational foundation,” he said.

The founder and Pro-chancellor of the Newgate University Minna Dr. Hassan Nuhu said the university was not just established to provide degrees and thereby create job seekers, but it is creating job creators through the quality of programmes it churns out.

He called on providers of higher institutions to raise job creators and not job seekers if Nigeria must get it right economically.

Nuhu disclosed at the convocation and award of degrees that the institution has awarded over 400 scholarships to deserving students

“True to our name, Newgate stands as a gateway to new opportunities, a cradle where ideas are born, nurtured, and transformed.

“It is where bold ideas from both staff and students are incubated, refined, and released to the world.

“We are not here to merely award degrees. We are here to equip destinies. We are not producing job seekers. We are raising job creators, inventors, builders, and entrepreneurs whose footprints will define the next decade,” Nuhu said.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Sadiq Yusuf, in his remarks, disclosed that 14 students graduated with first-class honours, 81 with second-class upper, 88 with second-class lower, and 24 with third-class degrees.

He said the institution’s rapid growth since it began academic activities which has resulted in sporadic growth.

“We started off with 350 students in 2022, but  now we boost of a population of over 2000 students across 13 academic programmes in four faculties.

He added that ten of these programmes have received full accreditation from the Nigerian University Commission.
