Kwara hands over site for varsity’s Senate building construction

The Kwara State Government has handed over the site for the construction of a multistorey Senate building for the Kwara State University of Education (KWASUED), marking a major milestone in Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s Smart City project.

According to a statement made available by the Press Secretary of the Kwara State Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Kunle Gbadeyan, to PUNCH Online on Friday, the university’s permanent campus, along with other key public and private sector infrastructure, will be located in the First District of the Kwara Smart City at Alalubosa, Ilorin East Local Government Area.

The Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Segun Ogunsola, stated that the Smart City will comprise 20 districts, with the First District featuring the university and other iconic facilities.

He revealed that 30 kilometers of the 120 kilometers of roads within the First, Second, and Third Districts have already been cleared to ensure the smooth commencement of the project.

During the handover to contractor MC&T Nig Ltd, Dr. Ogunsola said, “We expect a quality job that will provide a standard campus for the people of Kwara State. We are making history because we have a visionary leader who believes that to develop any state, you must invest in education and supporting infrastructure.

“This is mostly virgin land, and in a couple of months, we are going to see development across education, health, housing, and other sectors.

“Everywhere will be planned—from residential to commercial areas, education and enterprise zones, recreational spaces—all within 20 districts connected by sustainable transportation. This is worthy of commendation and emulation.”

Ogunsola also highlighted AbdulRazaq’s facilitation of 250 housing units through the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, alongside an additional 100 units under the Renewed Hope Housing Estate initiative.

The ceremony was attended by top officials, including Commissioner for Tertiary Education Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Housing, Alhaja Risikat AbdulAzeez; Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye; Vice Chancellor of KWASUED, Prof. Medinat Salman; and Baale Alalubosa, Alhaji Sakariyau Sonibare.

Modibbo praised the Governor for prioritizing education, stating: “Education is the most important empowerment you can give because it provides a level playing ground for all children.” Ajakaye lauded the project as a model for sustainable living, while Baale Alalubosa expressed hope that the university’s main campus would stimulate rapid growth and development in the community.
