Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Abbas Sanusi. I was born and raised in Isale Oja, Agege, Lagos. I am an entrepreneur.

How did you meet your wife?

I met my precious wife, Aisha, in Agege at Courage Studios. Our union has lasted for over 15 years. I am proud to have a joyful and blessed marriage because my wife is the best partner I could ever ask for.

When many respected Islamic scholars, including the Mudir of Markaz, Sheikh Habeebllah Adam Al-Ilory, and the Mudir of Nur ul-Islamic Arabic and Islamic Training Centre, Sheikh Daud AbdulMojeed Alfanla, attended our Nikkah, I knew Allah had truly chosen us for each other.

How did she react when you proposed?

Her reaction was surprising because she thought we were related, just as I did. Initially, I believed her mother was my father’s niece, and she believed the same. When I proposed, she screamed on the phone, saying “boda mi,” meaning “my brother.” She asked how siblings could marry. That was when I explained everything clearly. She told me she would speak to her mum before giving me a response.

I remember disturbing her friend and coursemate to help me talk to her, and even visiting her mum’s shop, pretending to buy something, just to get her attention.

What was her parents’ reaction?

Fortunately, I was already very close to her mum, the Chief Executive Officer of Courage Photography, Alhaja Bosede Taiwo. Before proposing to my wife, I had asked for her mum’s blessing.

She told me that daughters are no longer forced into marriage and that if I truly loved her daughter, I should go ahead and propose to her myself.

Before then, I had also spoken with her younger sister, Bisola Courage, about my wife’s love life. She told me her sister was not in a relationship. When I told her I wanted to marry her sister, she gave me her full support and encouraged me to continue.

How many children do you have?

To the glory of Almighty Allah, we are blessed with three children, two boys and one girl. They are Al-Ameen, AbdulHaseeb, and our only daughter, Haseebah.

What has been your best moment as a couple?

We have always enjoyed beautiful moments together, so I cannot single out any particular one as the best. All our moments together are special.

What advice do you have for young couples?

Couples should learn to trust each other, be honest, and be content. No marriage is perfect; we all learn to manage and understand one another. They should support each other and be prayerful.

What is your view on the rising rate of marriage breakups in Nigeria?

Breakups happen, but I have noticed that many lack prayer and contentment. Some occur because husbands neglect their responsibilities as heads of the home, while some wives try to equate themselves with their husbands in ways that create conflict. Many people were also not properly trained or guided from home.
