Alonso backs Mbappe to break Cristiano Ronaldo’s calendar goal record
Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has expressed strong confidence in Kylian Mbappe‘s ability to break a goal-scoring record currently held by club legend Cristiano Ronaldo.
The French superstar finished as La Liga’s top scorer last season and has already netted 55 goals for Real Madrid in 2025, leaving him just four short of Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2013 club record of 59 goals in a calendar year.
Mbappe’s dominance has drawn comparisons to Ronaldo, Real Madrid’s all-time leading scorer, thanks to his explosive impact and relentless scoring rate.

“Kylian is on his way to making history at Real Madrid as Cristiano did. Not just because of the importance he has in the team, but also because of the ambition he conveys and the number of goals he scores,” Alonso told reporters.
“Kylian is one of the chosen ones. He has this desire not just to do things well, but to positively influence others. This is something he shares with Cristiano, a contagious ambition that inspires the rest of the team.”
Mbappe, who won both the European Golden Shoe and La Liga top scorer award last season with 31 league goals, is performing at an even higher level this year. He has already scored 16 goals in 15 league matches, along with nine in five Champions League games.
As a child, Mbappé famously covered his bedroom walls with Ronaldo posters, and now he stands on the brink of surpassing his idol’s milestone. He can close the gap on the record when Celta Vigo visit the Bernabéu on Sunday.
Real Madrid also face Manchester City in the Champions League on December 10 before league fixtures against Alavés and Sevilla, giving Mbappe four chances to break Ronaldo’s mark.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored 450 goals in 438 matches for Real Madrid. Mbappe, who joined from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024, has already registered 69 goals in 79 appearances for the club.
