FCT CP meets traditional rulers over council polls
The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), CP Miller G. Dantawaye, has met with traditional rulers, community leaders, and village heads to urge them to sensitize their subjects against viewing the upcoming February 21 chairmanship election as a “do-or-die” affair.
Speaking at the palaces of the Sa’peyi of Garki, HRH Alhaji Dr. Usman Nga Kupi, and the Gomo of Kuje, HRH Alhaji Dr. Haruna Tanko Jibrin, CP Miller stressed the importance of traditional rulers—as custodians of their people—to advise residents to conduct themselves peacefully before, during, and after the polls.
During the visits, the CP engaged extensively with community leaders, including 36 village heads in the Garki District and 124 village heads in the Kuje Area Council.
He emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence, tolerance, and collective responsibility as preparations for the election continue across the territory.
He warned that elections should not be seen as a desperate struggle, noting that democratic processes provide continuous opportunities and that the outcome of any election should never justify violence or the breakdown of law and order.
According to him, the ultimate goal remains the conduct of peaceful, credible, and violence-free elections across the FCT.
The Police Commissioner further called on traditional rulers and community leaders to leverage their influence by sensitizing their subjects to shun violence, resist misinformation, and cooperate with security agencies throughout the electoral process.
CP Miller said the courtesy visits were part of the command’s community-oriented policing and stakeholder engagement strategy, aimed at strengthening collaboration between the police and local communities.
He urged FCT residents to promptly report emergencies or suspicious activities through the command’s emergency lines at 08032003913 and 08028940883.
