Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has clarified the timeline and details of the multi-billion-naira defamation suit he filed against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing recent social media claims by the senator as “false and misleading.”
In a statement issued on Saturday by his media aide, Jackson Udom, titled “Setting the Record Straight on the Defamation Case Involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan,” Akpabio addressed claims that the suit had “just been filed.”
“On 5 December 2025, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan again resorted to social media to incorrectly and misleadingly suggest that the defamation suit against her was newly filed.
“These allegations have never been supported by any evidence before the Senate Committee or any competent authority,” the statement read.
The statement explained that the suit, filed over three months ago, was temporarily delayed due to routine administrative processes and standard judicial procedures.
It claimed that multiple attempts were made by the court’s bailiff to personally serve Akpoti-Uduaghan with the originating processes, but each attempt failed due to what the affidavit describes as her deliberate evasion.
The court later granted an application for substituted service in November.
Akpabio emphasised that legal disputes are settled in courts, not on social media, and urged Akpoti-Uduaghan to present any evidence she claims to have before a competent jurisdiction.
The statement described her social media posts as part of a pattern of attempting to delegitimise lawful processes, citing her six-month Senate suspension as an example.
“The law is guided by proof, procedure, and due process, not sentiment, not emotion, and certainly not social-media theatrics.
“The public, media, and legal community now await her defence to the defamatory claims,” the statement concluded.
PUNCH Online had reported that Akpabio slammed a fresh N200 billion defamation lawsuit on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
