EPL: Rogers double powers Aston Villa past Man United
Morgan Rogers scored twice as in-form Aston Villa defeated Manchester United 2–1 in a Premier League fixture at Villa Park to extend their winning run to 10 matches in all competitions.
Matheus Cunha cancelled out Rogers’ stunning opener, but the England forward struck again in the second half to prove the difference in an otherwise evenly contested encounter.
Unai Emery’s side were not at their fluent best, yet Rogers’ quality told as he gave Villa the lead a minute before half-time with a superb curling effort into the corner.
United responded after the break when Cunha capitalised on a Matty Cash error to draw level. However, Rogers once again stepped inside defender Leny Yoro before curling a near-identical finish beyond Senne Lammens to score his sixth goal in as many league games.
Emery celebrated as Villa claimed only their second home Premier League victory over United in 27 attempts and moved to within three points of leaders Arsenal.
It was a difficult afternoon for United head coach Ruben Amorim, whose problems deepened when captain Bruno Fernandes was forced off injured at half-time.
Amorim was already without six senior players due to injury, suspension and Africa Cup of Nations commitments, with Kobbie Mainoo also ruled out pre-match with a calf issue.
The victory keeps Aston Villa third in the Premier League table, cutting the gap to Arsenal to three points, while United missed the opportunity to move above Liverpool into fifth place.
