
Soldiers kill 4, recover weapons in Taraba
Troops of 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army, have neutralised four armed militia members and recovered weapons during a rapid response in the renewed communal violence in Usmanu Village between Shomo and Wurkun ethnic groups in Karim-Lamido local government area of Taraba state.
The operation followed a credible intelligence report indicating a resurgence of long-standing land disputes between the Shomo and Wurkun communities in the area.
Spokesperson of the 6 Brigade Jalingo, Lieutenant Umar Mohammed, told journalists in Jalingo, Sunday, that the dispute escalated into armed clashes, destroying property, including the burning of houses.
According to the Army spokesperson, soldiers of the 6 Brigade immediately deployed forces to restore order and prevent further deterioration of the conflict.
He stated further that upon reaching the area, the troops came under fire from armed militia who emerged from the Fadama axis, and a fierce exchange ensued, during which the soldiers neutralised four of the attackers.
He said after searching the area, the soldiers recovered one fabricated AK-47 rifle, three dane guns, 25 rounds of 7.6mm special ammunition and two motorcycles.
In a development that underscores the complexity of the conflict, a personnel of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) found operating alongside the armed militia was arrested.
Lieutenant Umar further disclosed that the arrested police personnel is currently undergoing further investigation and profiling to determine his level of involvement.
The commander of 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Uwa, commended the soldiers for their swift action leading to the killing of the militias and assured the people of Karim Lamido and Taraba State at large of the Brigade’s unwavering commitment to restoring lasting peace and stability.
