Abba Yusuf to return to APC after mass defection from NNPP in Kano
Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano state, is set to formally rejoin the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, following his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
The move comes days after Yusuf, alongside a large bloc of elected officials in the state, announced their exit from the NNPP. Those who resigned with the governor include 21 members of the Kano state house of assembly, eight members of the house of representatives, and all 44 local government chairpersons in the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Bature Tofa, the governor’s spokesperson, said Yusuf’s decision was shaped by his political trajectory and a belief that the APC offers a more familiar and organised platform for governance.

According to Tofa, Yusuf first joined the APC in 2014 after emerging as the party’s candidate for the Kano central senatorial seat. He later stepped aside for Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of the state, a move that, he said, demonstrated his long-standing ties to the ruling party.
The spokesperson said Yusuf believes returning to the APC would improve cooperation between Kano and the federal government, particularly in the areas of security coordination, infrastructure development and service delivery.
He added that the decision was also aimed at promoting political stability and unity within the state.
Tofa said the governor will officially register as an APC member in Kano on Monday, alongside 22 state lawmakers, eight members of the house of representatives and the 44 local government chairmen.
Yusuf is also expected to formally launch the APC’s electronic membership registration exercise in the state on the same day.
