120 killed as Kano fire service handles 838 emergencies
The Kano State Fire Service has said that it responded to 838 distress calls across the state as fire, road accidents, and water-related incidents claimed 120 lives.
The Service disclosed this in an end of year statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, who said the emergencies were recorded between January 1 and December 31, 2025.
According to the breakdown, fire outbreaks accounted for the bulk of the incidents, with 665 cases recorded during the year. Rescue operations followed with 130 calls, while 43 alerts turned out to be false alarms.
Abdullahi stated that despite the scale and frequency of the emergencies, firefighters and rescue teams were able to save 91 lives through timely interventions.
Beyond the human toll, he said the economic cost of the disasters was significant as property worth an estimated N6.47 billion was destroyed, while assets valued at about N15.32 billion were salvaged due to swift response efforts by the Service.
He explained that the operations covered all 44 local government areas of Kano State, carried out through the Service’s 30 fire stations under the leadership of the Director, Alhaji Sani Anas.
A major concern highlighted in the report was the sharp rise in residential fire outbreaks, which climbed to 376 cases in 2025. The Service warned that many of these incidents were preventable and linked to unsafe practices in homes.
The fire service renewed its call on residents to take fire safety seriously, urging households and businesses to adopt basic preventive measures and exercise caution in the handling of fire, electrical appliances, and flammable materials.
The Service stressed that greater public awareness and cooperation remain critical to reducing avoidable disasters and protecting lives and property across Kano State.
